Hit with Import Duties/Fees using DHL in the US!!!!!! MyFigureCollection.net

July 2024 · 2 minute read
So I got a big old nasty shock today and had to pay about $70 in fees for a large DHL shipment from Hobby Link Japan. It was a private warehouse shipment totaling ¥78,600 ... however, I always thought the conventional wisdom was that import fees don't hit until about $2,000 for a single shipment coming into the US. I have used DHL a few times this year, though, since EMS is not available. They were probably closer to around $400-$600 I'd guess. I can't find any specific information on DHL's website aside from the general "there might be fees based on random things."

Has anyone else had to pay duty fees on DHL shipments in the US? Does anyone know what the details are? I'm not going to keep shelling out for DHL if they're going to suddenly charge me extra. Does Fedex do this, too?

For fuck's sake, can we just get EMS back?!?!

EDIT!!!!!

I called and talked to DHL and apparently over $800 is where import fees kick in for them, so be careful, everyone! Since my order was close, it's possible HLJ included the shipping cost in the invoice/customs information which tipped my order over $800 (or something since it was pretty close!) I will get the package today, so I'll be able to look at the paperwork. I did go ahead and pay the fee online, and now I just know to keep my private warehouse orders well under $800 when using DHL!

EDIT 2!!!!

The package has arrived! I'm always impressed with HLJ's skill in picking the right size box and packing it perfectly. Was the fee worth it for my waifus? OF COURSE. I'm a crazy weeb collector, after all! Images below the cut!
